What is coming up?

The purpose of World Rare Disease Day is to bring attention to rare diseases for acceptance, funding, and research.  So, wear your “Jeans for Genes” and your ribbon on February 28th for all of the people around you living with a rare disease.

Rickie Mitchell, sister of Austyn Mitchell was diagnosed with a rare disease called Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome – she is 1 in 50,000 people in the world with it!

-Rickie will always be very small

-Rickie eats most of her meals through a “g-tube” which is basically a tube that puts food directly into her stomach.  Right now she eats mostly special formula but someday with a good blender, she will be able to eat anything she wants – even pizza and cheeseburgers!

-Rickie just started Pre-K and LOVES IT!  She loves other kids and will wave and smile when you talk to her!

-One of Rickie’s favorite things to do is go to Colorado Rockies baseball games.  She loves the lights and loud noises and especially the loud music!

*A disease is considered rare if less than 1 in 6,000 people are affected by it

*8 out of 10 rare diseases are caused by a faulty gene

*Worldwide approx. 400 million people suffer from rare diseases

*a staggering 95% of rare diseases have no FDA approved treatments

*50 % of people living with rare diseases are children
